Günther Blumentritt was appointed Chief of Staff Fourth Army in the autumn of 1940 until posted as Chief of the Operations Department of the German High Command in January 1942. At the end of that year he was made Chief of Staff of Army Group D with the rank of Lieutenant-General, a position he held until September 1944 when he was given command of the 12th SS Corps with the rank of General of the Waffen SS. Appointed commander of the 25th Army in January 1945, and assumed command of the 1st Parachute Army in March 1945. He was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross for his dedicated service.
